Pacific Bird Watch
At Pacific, innovation is about more than adopting new technologies, it is about using them with purpose and in ways that allow us to connect with the world around us. In Year 10 STEM, students are doing exactly this through an exciting and emerging unit centred on BirdWeather technology.
Last year, the College invested in its first BirdWeather Portable Universe Codec (PUC). This device uses AI-powered sound recognition to detect and identify bird calls, automatically classifying species and generating a stream of real-time environmental data. This provides a unique opportunity for students to explore how artificial intelligence can be applied in meaningful, real-world contexts.
An Exploratory Beginning
This first implementation has been exploratory in nature. With a single PUC installed locally, the focus has been on understanding what the technology offers and what might be possible.
Students have been introduced to the types of data available - bird species, activity patterns, and environmental conditions, and have begun to critically explore what questions this data could help answer. This initial phase has been less about finding definitive answers and more about opening-up possibilities, allowing students to think deeply about what data is available, how reliable it is, and how it could be used.
Engaging Students in Real-World Data
Through this experience, students are stepping into the role of data analysts. They are developing inquiry questions, selecting relevant datasets, and learning how to clean, organise, and interpret information to draw meaningful conclusions.
Importantly, this first stage has enabled students to engage directly with authentic data and to recognise both its potential and its limitations. Rather than being given predefined answers, students are learning to ask:
- What does this data actually tell us?
- What might be missing?
- How could we use it to make informed decisions?
This strongly aligns with the College’s theme of Connection, Capability and Co-creation, as students develop technical and data analytics capabilities while deepening connection to their local environment.
From Exploration to Agency
Looking ahead, we hope to grow this initiative. As our understanding of the technology deepens, there are opportunities to expand the program through additional PUC devices placed across the campus. This would allow for richer datasets, longer-term analysis, and greater insights into bird activity.
The long-term vision is to move from exploration to increased student agency through active impact. Students will be empowered to:
- Monitor bird populations across different areas of the College
- Identify patterns and challenges within the environment
- Design and implement solutions that support bird life and the surrounding environment
Through their investigations, students may examine ways to support protected species, reduce behaviours that disrupt bird habitats or contribute to addressing concerns such as litter and food waste attracting individual species. The focus is to create safe, positive, and sustainable changes that support a balanced ecosystem.
Connecting Beyond the College
A key future direction of this unit is the development of partnerships beyond the College. There is strong potential to connect with environmental organisations, researchers, and community groups, allowing students to contribute to broader datasets and real-world initiatives.
By working alongside external experts and stakeholders, students will further develop their sense of co-agency - recognising that meaningful change happens through collaboration and shared responsibility.
Developing Skills for the Future
This unit prepares students for a rapidly evolving world by positioning them as active contributors to real-world challenges. Engaging with current and emerging technologies, the data analytics process, and environmentally focused decision-making, students work collaboratively to interpret data and propose informed, meaningful actions.
In doing so, students gain valuable opportunities to strengthen key learner attributes in the areas of collaboration and active impact, working together with a shared sense of responsibility to explore ideas, consider diverse perspectives, and co-create solutions, while using evidence to make ethical, informed decisions that positively impact society and the environment.
Together, these capabilities align with a wide range of future pathways, including:
- Data science and analytics
- Environmental science and sustainability
- Ecology and conservation
The BirdWeather unit represents innovation with meaningful outcomes - where technology, inquiry, and responsibility intersect. What has begun as a small-scale exploration, has the potential to provide students with powerful opportunities to think critically, act responsibly, and engage with real-world challenges.
As the program grows, so too will the potential for students to shape their environment in positive and lasting ways, demonstrating that even small innovations can lead to significant impact.
