Pacific Tiny Homes: From Blueprint to Future Pathways
Pacific Lutheran College is proud to announce the launch of the new Senior Industrial Technology Skills (ITS) program, commencing in 2027. At the heart of this innovative subject will be the Pacific Tiny Homes project an authentic, industry-connected learning experience where students will engage in the complete construction of a fully functioning tiny home.
More than simply building a structure, students will immerse themselves in every stage of the construction process, developing practical trade skills alongside capabilities in project management, collaboration, problem solving and innovation. From initial planning and site preparation through to framing, cladding, fixing, finishing and furnishing, students will experience the realities of working within the modern construction industry.
The Pacific Tiny Homes project has been designed to provide students with meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities that connect directly to real-world pathways in the building, construction and manufacturing industries. Throughout the project, students will engage with industry professionals and local tradespeople, gaining valuable insights into workplace expectations, emerging technologies and contemporary construction practices. Partnerships with builders, suppliers and industry mentors will help students develop employability skills while building strong connections between learning and future career opportunities.
Students will also explore the broader aspects of the domestic construction industry, including workplace health and safety, sustainable building practices, material selection, construction technologies, budgeting and project coordination. Through this authentic learning environment, students will develop confidence using industry-standard tools, equipment and processes while learning the importance of teamwork, communication and adaptability.
The introduction of Industrial Technology Skills and Pacific Tiny Homes reflects Pacific Lutheran College’s commitment to future-focused learning experiences that empower students to learn by doing. The project provides opportunities for students to develop practical capabilities while also fostering creativity, resilience and pride in craftsmanship.
Importantly, the Tiny Home project represents more than a classroom task. It is a visible and purposeful community project that showcases student capability, innovation and collaboration. As the program grows, Pacific Tiny Homes will play a central role in Design Technologies at the College, providing students with authentic opportunities to explore careers in construction, engineering, design and advanced manufacturing.
