Supporting Brain Development and Wellbeing Through Music

30 July 2026

Across our classrooms, rehearsal spaces and ensembles, we are seeing more students than ever choosing to engage with music as part of their Pacific journey.

This year, more than 32% of Pacific students are involved in Music through elective curriculum pathways, ensembles, or both. This remarkable level of participation reflects the growing role music plays within the Pacific community and highlights the value that students and families place on creative learning experiences.

While music is often associated with performances and concerts, what happens behind the scenes is equally important. Every rehearsal, lesson, and ensemble experience provides students with opportunities to develop skills that extend far beyond music itself. As educators, we see students learning how to persevere through challenges, collaborate with others, create a song from scratch, manage performance nerves, and build confidence in their own abilities.

These observations are supported by growing research in neuroscience and education. Learning music engages multiple areas of the brain simultaneously, requiring students to listen, focus, remember, problem solve, coordinate movement, regulate emotions, and respond to feedback in real time. Music education is pivotal in brain development, allowing students to combine cognitive, emotional, and social development so effectively.

One of the most rewarding aspects of music education is witnessing students develop resilience and self-belief. Progress in music rarely happens instantly. Students learn that mistakes are a natural part of growth and that success is achieved through consistent effort over time. Whether mastering a challenging rhythm, learning new terminology/symbols, preparing for a performance, or learning a new instrument, students develop confidence in their ability to overcome obstacles and achieve meaningful goals.

Equally important is the sense of belonging that music creates. Ensemble programs provide students with opportunities to contribute to something larger than themselves. They learn to listen, support one another, and work towards shared goals. In a world where connection and wellbeing are increasingly important, these experiences help foster empathy, community, and positive relationships.

This year, we have been particularly encouraged by the breadth of engagement across the program. From our Prep students beginning their Pacific music journeys, to students exploring composition and creativity in the classroom, to our choirs, bands, orchestras, and contemporary ensembles rehearsing throughout the week, music continues to provide diverse pathways for students to discover their strengths and passions.

For some students, music becomes a creative outlet. For others, it becomes a place of challenge, growth, friendship, and belonging. Whatever their pathway, students are developing far more than musical skills. They are building the confidence, resilience, and social connections that support lifelong learning and wellbeing.

As we celebrate a strong beginning to 2026, we remain committed to providing meaningful musical opportunities for all students. We are incredibly proud of the vibrant Music community that continues to grow at Pacific and look forward to seeing our students flourish both as musicians and as young people throughout the year.
