Everyone wants ‘the good life’! But what is the best way to live our lives in this world today? How are we to have joy and peace in our relationships with family, friends and neighbours? What will enable us to feel that we belong to community and that we can contribute constructively to our life and that of others?
Much of our culture tells us that we need to know who we are, what we want, and how we can get there. It encourages us to fulfill our personal desires, strive to attain what we want in this world, and to put our own needs and desires as our number one goals. Yet when we do this, we still seem to be losing out. We still seem to struggle for joy and peace in our everyday lives.
Micah 6:8 gives us some clear instructions about how we can have the joy and peace that we desire within our everyday lives. Micah tells us that we will live a life of joy and peace when we ‘walk humbly with our God’.
To ‘walk humbly with our God’ calls us to have a change in our heart’s desires from being focused on ourselves and what we want, to desiring to act justly and show loving mercy to everyone in all our daily activities. This is the attitude of our heart that we are called to actively adopt in every encounter that we have with everyone that we meet. This encourages us to never view ourselves as better or above others, but to be willing to approach them with mercy and grace, and in love care for and show kindness to all.
We have been called to walk humbly with our God. This is not something that we produce by our own power. Rather this is something that we humbly receive as a loving, gift from our gracious, merciful, forgiving, and loving God. In and through Jesus we are welcomed into close fellowship with a loving and merciful God who empowers us to act with true justice, mercy and loving kindness towards others.
As we live, walking in this humble, close relationship, relying on Jesus to work in and through us, we grow in the freedom of joy and peace that comes from what Jesus has done for us. In this way we can be a great hope for our world, as we reflect God’s justice, mercy and loving kindness to all around us. May this be what people see whenever they look at our Pacific College community.
God bless you as you walk humbly with your God.
Spirituality and Service Captains attend Red Shield Appeal Breakfast
On the 7th May we attended the launch of the Red Shield Appeal by the Caloundra Salvation Army with a fundraising breakfast at the Caloundra Power Boat Club. This year I was lucky enough along with three of the College’s Spirituality and Service Captains, Freya, Rhianna, and Zoe to be invited guests to this breakfast as a thank you for Pacific’s 20 years of support of the Red Shield Appeal. This was a great learning experience to see and hear about how the Pacific community’s contributions to the Red Shield Appeal benefit the Caloundra community. It also gave great insights to the captains of how networking can be achieved at this type of event.
We were informed that everything raised in Caloundra would be directed to Caloundra’s Family Pathways Support Program. This program aims at supporting families that are doing it tough and identified through certain primary schools in our area that are connected to this program. A highlight of the morning was hearing from some of the clients of the program and how they have been greatly helped by the services provided. Their sharing put a very human face on the struggles within the Caloundra area and how the support given by all who contribute to the Appeal, really does change lives for the better. Thank you for your support.
Another highlight was the presentation by our student leaders that participated in the program. They were able to outline how this is so beneficial for the children who are affected by all sorts of family difficulties and the importance of going to the source through the support given by the various Salvation Army agencies. Every contribution, no matter how small is a great assistance to those that need such help.
The Caloundra Salvation Army greatly appreciate our involvement in the Red Shield Appeal and reminded us that this Appeal continues throughout the month of May. So if you missed the opportunity to contribute during our week at Pacific and would still like to, there will be collectors out middle to end of May or do so on line at www.salvationarmy.org.au/rsacal
All your contributions are greatly appreciated and demonstrate God’s love and justice within our community.
