Our community is very blessed by the capability and generosity of men who play important roles as teachers, grounds staff, teacher aides, IT staff, bus drivers, counsellors, pastors, chaplains, administrators, College Council members, coaches, managers, mentors and volunteers. Their very strong can do attitude builds momentum, strength and opportunity. They model for our young people the value of service and care for people within community. Within families, Dads and father figures give generously of themselves as they show their love and care through so many different ways. 

God has blessed us richly through the men in our community and in our families. We say thank you to our men and thank you to God for the gifts He brings into our families and community through the men in our lives. We say a prayer of thanks and trust that all of our Dads and father figures have a very special day on Sunday where they know how much they are loved and appreciated.

Our community very much enjoyed the opportunity to come together and celebrate the important role that men and fathers play within our community at this morning’s Dad’s breakfast. Over 500 people enjoyed the wonderful breakfast provided by our hospitality team and the talent of our musicians as they made the most of the opportunity to connect. Students through the week have also enjoyed purchasing that special something at the Father’s Day stall conducted by our Friends of Pacific. We thank our hospitality team, musicians, and Friends of Pacific for helping us to celebrate and show our appreciation to our Dads. 

As we celebrated Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation Week we honoured the important role that all of our non teaching staff play within our community. Our teacher aides and non-teaching staff show great care for our community through their generous and capable use of their gifts to support young people, provide administrative, information technology, and finance services, lead our communications and marketing and enhance our grounds and facilities.  We say thank you to our non teaching staff for the tremendous difference they make for people and our community.

There was tremendous energy and spirit on display at the P-2 athletics carnival. Encouraged and cheered on by their parents, family members and supporters, our P-2 students enjoyed the opportunity to test their skills across a range of events. Well done to all of the students who gave of their best. Thank you to our parents and staff for their support of the event. A particular thank you to Head of P-6 Sport Mr Darren Hooper, Sports Administrator Mrs Lisa Muir and our sports team for their leadership of a great experience. 

Well done to the Pacific FC U16/17 Barracudas for their strong season and we wish Pacific FC Sharks and Seahorses all the best for their Grand Finals this weekend. We also wish Mr Trevor Picken’s All Abilities team all the best for their game. Congratulations to  the Division 1 Fireballs PLC netball team who won their semi-final and are headed to a grand final next week. We wish the Division 11 Magic team all the best as they play in their preliminary final this week. Congratulations to all our footballers and netballers on a strong season.

We wish all of our Dads and father figures a very happy Father’s Day on Sunday. We say a prayer of thanks for all of the people that enrich and enhance our lives.

This week’s reading focus: Romans 15:5 “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

In this text, Paul prays that God would give “a spirit of unity” to his followers in Rome so that they would demonstrate “love in all things”. Paul is not saying that they need to agree on everything, but he says they should lovingly make allowances for each other in the areas where they disagree.

Through the previous chapter, Paul repeatedly urged them to accept each other and not to judge, despise or offend each other over matters of individual difference. He summarizes his view in the words just before this prayer: “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please their neighbour for their good, to build them up. For even Christ did not please himself” (15:1-3).

Paul’s prayer is not that all should think the same, but that they have the mind of Christ. They need to “be like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Philippians 2:2-4). 

Unity then does not mean that everyone thinks the same but rather since it springs from the mind of Christ, it springs from a love that seeks the good of others. Unity is lively and life-giving. It requires that we lay down our “rights” in order to serve others. By our own human effort, we cannot develop such unity. This unity flows from God’s love through Jesus Christ.

As we receive endurance, patience and encouragement from Christ we can sustain our relationships, especially when differences or conflict arise. Through this endurance and encouragement, we grow in humility, selflessness and sacrificial love towards one another which breaks down division and fosters harmony within our community. This encourages cooperation rather than competition or rivalry.

The following are some practical ways that we can develop this type of unity within our community. We can accept that we all have different personalities, strengths and opinions which are beneficial for playing our part in developing a unified community of care at Pacific. We can support each other through the various challenges we face to build solidarity within our community. We can also choose forgiveness, compassion and service to one another which creates an environment of trust within our community.

As we pray for unity within our community, let’s ask God to show us where we need to make allowances for those with whom we disagree. Loving God, make us one as you are one and remove from us any action or attitude that disturbs the unity of our community. Amen.

A school is a place of formation, where we are invited to grow into better people for the world. We are encouraged to see our school community as a living organism, made up of our vibrancy of our students, staff, and families. Like any living body, the whole flourishes when each part plays its role with energy and purpose. 

For many young people, their entire school journey is shaped by one community. Over those years, they in turn leave their mark on the life of the school. Schools are places where this truth is lived daily, in the classroom, on the sporting field, in performances, and through countless everyday interactions. An important part of school life is engaging young people in “their” school, to help them take responsibility for, and take pride in, their community.

This term I have had the joy of coaching the Year 10 Intermediate Girls Touch Football team. Although the girls lost their recent game, they shared with me that as a group of friends they commit to trying every sport together: Term 1 Volleyball, Term 2 Soccer, Term 3 Touch Football, and Term 4 Rugby. They truly see the value of belonging to a team. As we reflected on their season, the Senior Touch Football team was playing their final game nearby. Amidst cheers and laughter, the Year 12 girls celebrated their last moments on the field and encouraged their Year 11 teammates to throw themselves into every opportunity with the sentiment to try everything, get involved!

Watching those touch football games unfold during the week was a reminder of what truly endures from our own school days. It isn’t the scores or results we remember most, but the connections, the friendships, and the moments of joy found in shared experiences. Opportunities, challenges, and team spirit shape us into who we are becoming. It was a lovely afternoon to witness both the Intermediate and Senior girls touch football teams play, laugh, and celebrate the bonds that make this community a living, breathing organism of care and connection.

For our Pacific students, the challenge is simple yet powerful, say “yes” to opportunities. Whether it is sport, music, service, leadership, or cultural activities, every experience enriches your journey and strengthens the fabric of our community. For parents, your encouragement makes an enormous difference. Supporting your young people to try something new, cheering them on from the sidelines, helping them manage their commitments, and celebrating both effort and achievement are ways you can nurture their sense of belonging. In partnership, we can inspire our young people to lean in, take part, and leave their unique mark on the life of the College.

Week 10 sees our Year 6 students and staff embarking on their long-awaited trip to Canberra. This experience is a highlight of their year and provides a rich opportunity to connect classroom learning with the living history and culture of our nation’s capital. Students will explore Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, and other significant landmarks, deepening their understanding of government, democracy, and national identity.

Beyond the educational experiences, the Canberra trip is also a valuable step in students’ personal growth. For many, this is the first extended time away from home. Navigating life independently for five days encourages resilience, confidence, and responsibility. From managing their own belongings to making decisions with friends and peers, students gain important life skills that support their growing independence. These moments of stepping outside their comfort zone often become the memories and lessons that last a lifetime.

Week 8 of Term 3 is well known for its busyness and the tiredness that can creep in for both students and families. Assessment, co-curricular commitments, and the demands of daily life can all build up at this point in the year. It is during these times that balance becomes especially important. Making intentional time to care for ourselves and our young people helps us finish the term well. Simple habits such as spending time in nature, keeping active, and setting aside screen-free moments to recharge can make a significant difference. Families may find value in planning restful routines, encouraging good sleep, and modelling healthy approaches to managing busy periods.

As we wish our Year 6 students and staff every blessing for a safe and enriching trip, we also encourage all families to pause, take a breath, and create space for balance. By looking after our wellbeing together, we enable our young people to approach their learning, friendships, and opportunities with energy and joy.

The Power of Independent Thinking

Across recent assemblies in both the Foundation and Junior College, we’ve explored how independence and independent thinking play a vital role in shaping not only our success but also the way we view ourselves.

As social beings, our growth is deeply influenced by the relationships and interactions we form. These connections help us learn, adapt, and thrive. Yet, in our desire to belong, we can sometimes feel pressured to act or speak in ways that don’t align with our personal values. Students have shared honest reflections about moments when they were encouraged to say or do things simply to fit in or gain approval.

This kind of pressure—whether subtle or overt—is something most of us have faced. Standing firm in our beliefs, especially when they go against the crowd, can be daunting and isolating. But the message we’ve been reinforcing is clear: when we compromise our values to please others, we often sacrifice our own happiness.

Choosing to “swim upstream” against popular opinion may be challenging, but it leads to a deeper sense of self-respect and personal pride. While others may not always understand or agree with our choices, prioritising our own integrity and wellbeing ultimately brings greater fulfilment.

This principle extends beyond social situations into our learning habits and decision-making. Sometimes, the pressure comes from within—through self-doubt, procrastination, or negative self-talk. These internal struggles can be just as powerful. By making choices that reflect our personal, family, and academic values, we build resilience, self-worth, and a stronger sense of identity. In the end, success isn’t just about achievement, it’s about staying true to who we are.

P-2 Athletics Carnival.

This week, our Foundation College enthusiastically attended the P-2 Athletics Carnival. There was great participation and house spirit, and we congratulate all students for their involvement in the day. It was well attended by many families, and we thank you the support shown to all our students on the day.

Next week, our Year 4’s and 5’s will participate in the Term 3 Gala Day, during which students travel across the coast to various venues to compete against other students from other independent schools. 

The opportunities provided through the College further enhance the experiences our students get to grow through. The elements of our You Can Do It programs, such as resilience and persistence, were on show for all to see. We thank the P.E. staff and especially the Head of Junior Sport, Mr Darren Hooper and the college sports aide, Mrs Lisa Muir, for preparing both days. 

Father’s Day

Father's Day is a special time to celebrate the incredible role that father’s and father figures play in the lives of young people. For me, it is by far the most important responsibility that I hold. Beyond providing love and care, many men make a profound impact by supporting their children's education and development. Whether it's helping with homework, coaching a sports team, or simply being there to listen and guide, fathers and father figures contribute significantly to the growth and success of the next generation. Their dedication and commitment not only shape the lives of their own children but also inspire and influence the broader community.

On Thursday 11th September 2025, people across Australia will recognise R U OK? Day - a national day of action that reminds us of the importance of checking in with those around us. At its heart, R U OK? Day is about encouraging meaningful conversations that can make a real difference when someone is struggling. Sometimes, a simple question – “Are you okay?” – can be the first step in helping a person feel heard, supported, and less alone.

For school-aged children, R U OK? Day has particular relevance. Friendships, schoolwork, family pressures, and the ups and downs of growing up can all affect a young person’s wellbeing. While children may not always recognise when their friends are having a hard time, learning to notice changes and to ask caring questions helps build empathy, resilience, and stronger social connections. Importantly, it also teaches them that they don’t need to “fix” someone else’s problems, but they can be there to listen and encourage their friends to seek help from a trusted adult.

As parents, you play a vital role in shaping how your children approach these conversations. Talking at home about R U OK? Day provides an opportunity to normalise discussions about feelings, mental health, and support. Here are a few ways you can help:

• Model openness: Share times when you have felt stressed or upset, and explain what helped you. This shows children it’s okay to experience difficult emotions.
• Practise the question: Encourage your child to ask, “Are you okay?” if they notice a friend is quieter, withdrawn, or acting differently.
• Teach listening skills: Remind your child that listening without judgment is powerful. Sometimes being present is more important than giving advice.
• Encourage help-seeking: Talk about who your child could turn to – teachers, counsellors, family – if they or a friend need extra support.
• Check in regularly: Make it part of family life to ask each other how you’re going, not just on R U OK? Day, but every day.

R U OK? Day reminds us all – young and old – that a conversation can change a life. By supporting your children to build these skills, you’re helping them create a caring community within their school and beyond.

This year we had 2 intermediate teams competing in the Sunshine Coast Schools Debating Association Competition. This week they competed at Sunshine Coast Grammar School in round 4 with debates around the topic “Blue collar work is more important than white collar work”.  We had both teams arguing for the affirmative side on this topic. Both teams narrowly lost to their opposition. Thank you to Miss Makani Campbell for adjudicating and coaching, Mrs Jodi Nielsen and parents for their passionate support involving many late nights.

Things the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) needs

Thanks to the Sunshine Coast community for your continued generosity. At the moment SCARS really needs good quality dry cat/kitten food. Their dogs and puppies are generously fed by donations from SavourLife. Donations towards their veterinary costs really do help out as well, so if you can spare $$ or donate health related products like worming or Heartgard products that would be great. Things SCARS Needs --old towels, old sheets, old blankets, quilts and dog food. Bring donations to the College gym on Tuesday the 16th of September before school or to the Middle/Senior assembly on that day.

Please pass this information onto your 2005 and 2015 Graduate to help us celebrate and share memories with old friends at the 20- and 10-year reunion for Pacific Lutheran College graduating classes. We would also love to feature graduates in an upcoming newsletter if they are happy to share a photo and a paragraph about their life's journey and how the College shaped them.

Fathers’ Day in the Library

This week students had fun making car-themed beaded keychains for their dads, as well as making cards. Mr Zack Griffin put together a special display with lots of great books, perfect for sharing with dad or granddad.

On Sunday August 31st, 17 students from Pacific Lutheran College participated in the Languages Speech Contest 2025 at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Japanese division.  This year saw 455 entrants from 44 schools across four languages of French, German, Italian and Japanese showcase their linguistic ability. 

It was wonderful to see students extend their learning experiences outside of the classroom by taking up this valuable opportunity.

Volunteer Call Out – we love supporting Pacific students and their friends from other schools at sporting events; however, we can only do this with support from Pacific families to spend an hour or two helping at our BBQ’s. If you have done your volunteer training this year, we would really appreciate some support, as our normal volunteers are unavailable for this event.

Touch Football

This week saw our Touch Football teams play their last round of the SCISSA competition before the Grand Finals. It was a tough week for many of our teams with most teams having a loss or a draw as their results. Well done to the Intermediate A Year 9 Boys for keeping their season alive with a strong away win.

Our Intermediate B Girls had a strong season and made it into the semi-finals for their division. The girls played extremely well but unfortunately went down to a well-versed opposition. Our Junior B Girls also played a top of the table clash which would have given them a shot at the Grand Finals, but unfortunately their tough draw has meant another team has pipped them up at  the top. The girls should be proud of the season. Both our Intermediate A Boys’ teams appear to have booked a spot in the Grand Final and we will wait to see how results pan out today. Thank you to all students and coaches for a fantastic season.

Our Senior Girls finished off their season with a fantastic win last week and it was great to see the Year 12s finish off in style. The Year 12 Girls started playing together a number of years ago with Coach Sam and it has been great to see how they have improved as players. A big thank you to Coach Sam for his ongoing efforts with the team.

Our Junior Girls and Junior Boys started their rounds this week. The Junior Boys went down in a tough match against a well versed opposition. The Junior Girls started brightly and had a win, even though we were under strength. We look forward to the Intermediate Boys starting their campaign next week.

Pacific FC Soccer:

Congratulations to Pacific FC Sharks and Seahorses who have made the SCCSA finals this coming weekend. We wish the players and coaches all the best for their games up at Buderim United Football Club, Maroochydore Multi-Sports Complex Fishermans road Maroochydore.

Student Acknowledgement

Jessica in Year 8 was selected to compete in both the Australian Open and the Oceania President’s Cup, held at the Gold Coast Sport and Leisure Centre. These events are recognised as major international tournaments, attracting athletes from over 40 countries, and are part of the World Taekwondo competition calendar. Jessica competed in the 12- to 14-year-old cadet division. She performed very well, placing in the top eight overall, and won a silver medal in the team event. It was a proud moment for her and Pacific, as she was representing at national level and gaining valuable experience against international competitors.

Prep – Year 2 Athletics Carnival 

Budding PLC athletic superstars were on display yesterday at the Prep – Year 2 Inter-House Athletics Carnival. The sun was out with warm sunshine highlighting great team spirit and sportsmanship by all houses. Students had been practicing all term during PE lessons and were excited to participate in the following events: 60m Sprint, javelin throw, tunnel ball, sack races, shuttle relays, long jump and high jump. 

Well done to all students who gave their best on the day for their house. In the end there can only be one winning house and this year’s top place went to Bula.

10 – 12 Year Sunshine Coast Regional Athletic Carnival 

Well done to our PLC athletics students who represented at the Independent District at last week’s Sunshine Coast Regional Athletics Carnival held at The University of the Sunshine Coast. At this carnival, students from Redcliffe all the way up to Noosa competed to be selected to represent the Sunshine Coast at the Queensland State Championships. 

PLC had eight students represent our College at this carnival in the 10 – 12 years age group. Congratulations to the following students who have now been selected to compete for the Sunshine Coast at the Queensland State Championships.

Pacific Lutheran College has several sports development programs outside of school hours. These programs encourage participation, giving students the opportunity to be part of a team, and learn basic skills of the game.

The parent-led Pacific FC Soccer and PLC Netball Clubs compete on Saturdays in community competitions throughout the Sunshine Coast.

The finals action continues this weekend.

The Div 1 Fireballs won their semi-final and earned a week break before the grand final next week. Caloundra District Netball Association (CDNA) are rolling out the grandstand seating for the Div 1 Grand Final, please come support the team in what is sure to be an amazing game at 12:30pm Saturday 13th September.

The Div 11 Magic lost a close game in their semi-final and will play the preliminary final this week, hoping to advance to their grand final.

The Div 9 Avengers bow out after a semi-final defeat last week, great effort to the girls for making it into the finals.

Congratulations to our U12/13 Seahorses and U13 Sharks on booking their Grand Final berths for this Saturday, 6th September. All finals will be held at Buderim United SC, Fishermans Rd, Maroochydore. While the Preliminary Final match result of the U16/17 Barracudas didn’t go our way, we are immensely proud of the team, some of whom are celebrating 12 years with Pacific FC. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be featuring highlights from the season including our 5-, 10- and 15-year members, Adermann nominations, Chaplains Award nominations and club volunteers.

MATCH REPORTS 

U13 SHARKS v Siena – Manager Mel 

The Sharks were determined from the first whistle, but with the wind against us in the opening half it was always going to be tough. The boys battled hard and went into half time trailing 1–3. A quick Siena goal just five minutes into the second half put us down 1–4. Some brilliant play and outstanding goals brought us level, finishing full time at 4–4. Extra time was a true test. Against the wind in the first half, we stayed composed and held Siena out. In the second half, with the wind at our backs, we executed perfectly. Harley nailed a spectacular strike from outside the box to give us the lead at 5–4. Ryder then sealed the deal with a clever finish and great footwork, taking us to 6–4 at the final whistle.

An incredible team effort – so proud of the boys. Next stop is the Grand Final.

U16/17 BARRACUDAS v Mooloolaba – Coach Sheldon

A spirited performance by the U16/17 Barracudas was not enough, going down 2-4 placing 3rd place overall. Well done to Mooloolaba and Caloundra on your achievements in making it to the Grand Final. The Barracudas played well throughout the season, were in every match and displayed pride in their individual and team performance. Our players love their club and have done us all proud. Best on field: Jacques and Brodie

Well done to all concerned. Thanks to players, training and managerial staff (Rod, Jarrod and Craig) supporters and our amazing club, Pacific FC. Special mention to Jenny and Rita - we’re so lucky to have them at Pacific FC.Onwards and upwards!
