Each of us are lifted by the large and small acts of service that we encounter each day. Parents and family members serve us as they ensure we have all that we need for each day. As we return to College, we see improvements having been made to our gardens and grounds. We see teachers and leaders who have spent extra time in exploring new initiatives or preparing engaging and thought provoking lessons. We see administration staff who have spent time preparing for events and the smooth start to the term. We see our IT team who have upgraded systems. We see young people who share enthusiastic greetings and embrace the opportunity to learn and support each other and staff.  We see parents and staff who have led and supported sporting experiences over the holiday period. In our families and this community, we are constantly lifted by the service of people. It is something that is worth pausing to see and to be grateful. 

God brings many gifts into our community through the generosity and talents of staff, students and parents. Service out of love for people is the heart that pumps lifeblood through this community and into us as people. As we serve together, empowered by God’s grace and love we flourish.

There has been tremendous energy as we have returned to the start of Term 4. Staff and students have connected together sharing stories about holiday experiences and engaging in learning and the rhythms of school life. We welcome all members of our community back to the start of Term 4 and particularly new families and students. We welcome back Head of Buran House, Mrs Leah Croke and Middle and Senior College Maths and Science teacher, Mrs Martina Bennett who return from leave. We also welcome Mrs Kim Moor who will be fulfilling the role of Middle and Senior College Visual Arts teacher when Ms Elise Black takes maternity leave this term. Ms Kim Moor brings a wealth of experience as a passionate teacher and leader in visual arts. We welcome Mr Daniel Kulk who is replacing Mrs Tracey Chellan while she is on leave at the start of this term and Mrs Jess Doodson as a Year 4 teacher for this term.

We wish our Year 12 students all the best as they complete their final week of classes this week and move into preparing for external exams. We thank them as a cohort for their leadership and particularly our College Captains, Pacific Action Group Captains and House Captains who have provided tremendous service as they have led our community. 

Over the holiday period our junior netballers took part in the Primary Schools Netball Cup and our Senior basketballers participated in the Champion Basketball School of Queensland Competition. Our netballers and basketballers all gained a great deal as they embraced the opportunity to compete against the best in the state. We thank Mr Brad Burdon, Mrs Michelle Dufty, Mrs Karen Costa and Miss Georgie Snelling for their leadership and support of these teams.

We wish our Year 9 students all the best as they engage in their two week outdoor education experience over the next fortnight. The experience provides a tremendous opportunity for growth as students engage in kayaking, initiative challenges and bushwalking in the Upper Noosa River area and then bushwalking in the Conondale Ranges. We thank Mr Paul Brace for his leadership and organisation and his team of staff for their support and leadership.

We give a prayer of thanks to God for the tremendous talents and strong heart of service and generosity of spirit that flows through this community.  We pray that God would guide and empower us to be people who graciously make a difference within and beyond our community throughout this term.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing.

sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have 

treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

The Bible reading that we have been looking at this week at school is the story of a rich man and his interaction with Jesus. The “rich man” (as he is referred to in the reading) asks Jesus what he needs to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus tells him to sell all he owns and give it to the poor. The rich man’s response was one of sadness. We don’t know if, in the end, the rich man decided to follow Jesus or not. All we are told is that he was very wealthy. Jesus makes a point of telling us how hard it is for people who want to hold onto their wealth, to make it into heaven. 

This verse is a familiar one to many people and is a stark reminder to us about what is truly important in life. The world tells us that we need to look after ourselves, and that we need more. However, in reality, that won’t fulfil us (despite how much we think that it will), and Jesus knew this. So many of us are so blessed with more “wealth” than what we realise, and Jesus has a clear message for us all here – use what we have to serve others. It doesn’t have to be monetary wealth either, for all that we have can be used in the service of others.

Serving others is something that is integral to a full Pacific education. Service to others is seen daily in the College. Sometimes we see service very clearly on display in the major events, such as helping at the Disabled Surfers Association event, or with people serving others at the Celebrating Dad’s Breakfast; but it is also seen behind the scenes of the OCEANfest (thank you Friends of Pacific team!), in the quiet of the night when teachers are planning lessons for students, in the light of day when students help someone else when they are struggling at school, or on the holidays when the groundsmen are busy preparing the grounds for when we all return again.

At the heart of Lutheran education is the concept of looking out for others. By focusing on other people’s needs and showing genuine care for others, we are reflecting Christ’s love and care for us. By letting go of our own material possessions so that others can benefit, we are showing what is really important in our lives. Thinking of others takes us out of our own situation and helps us put things into perspective, and in turn, affects our view of the world around us.

The best part is that you don’t have to be wealthy to serve others. Jesus calls us to give what we do have and follow him. And when we do this, we are showing what is truly important in our lives. 

Jesus’ invitation to “come, follow me” is not a command to give up everything for the sake of loss, but an invitation to discover everything through Him. The rich man walked away sad because he couldn’t let go of what he thought defined him. But through grace, we are reminded that our worth isn’t found in what we own or achieve — it’s found in Christ alone. And when we live from that truth, serving others becomes an act of joy, not obligation; a reflection of the God who has already given us everything we truly need.

The Queensland government is raising awareness of the importance of safety when young people use e-bikes and e-scooters.

The increasing number of children riding e-mobility devices such as e-scooters and e-bikes has become a significant concern across our Sunshine Coast community, stemming to the wider south east Queensland region. While these devices may seem convenient or fun, they can pose substantial danger, particularly for young and inexperienced riders who are among our most vulnerable road users.

There are concerningly high numbers of young people across Queensland riding illegal e-bike devices, including to and from school. While many families believe the device their child is riding is a standard e-bike, it may not actually meet the legal requirements to be ridden in public places. Likewise, the minimum legal age to ride an e-scooter unsupervised in Queensland is 16 years, yet many children under this age are using them on public roads and footpaths.

Equally worrying is rider behaviour. Reports continue to highlight children:

•          Swerving in and out of traffic,

•          Riding at unsafe speeds, and

•          Failing to wear helmets.

Sadly, this behaviour has resulted in serious injuries and fatalities across Queensland, and the number of incidents is increasing.

Recent data from Sunshine Coast University Hospital recorded 176 injuries to children aged 5–15 between 2023 and 2024 from e-mobility devices. Similarly, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service reported 221 injuries to children aged up to 15 between May 2024 and April 2025, with young males the most frequently injured group.

How You Can Help

We ask all families to take a few moments to familiarise themselves with the rules below and to have open conversations with children about their responsibilities and safety on the road. Further information can be found at StreetSmarts Queensland – E-Bikes and E-Scooters.

E-Scooter Rules

•          Riders must be 16 years or older to ride unsupervised.

•          Helmets (bicycle or motorcycle) must be worn and properly fastened.

•          Only one rider per device - passengers are not permitted.

•          Speed limit: 12 km/h on footpaths and shared paths.

E-Bike Rules

A legal e-bike must have:

•          Pedals as the primary source of power, with the motor providing assistance only.

•          Motor assistance limited to 25 km/h and a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts.

•          A compliance sticker (EN15194) displayed.

•          Compliance with the same rules as regular bicycles.

Serious fines can apply to both riders and parents for e-mobility offences, and police may confiscate illegal devices.

We appreciate the partnership we have with parents in working together to ensure our young people are safe travelling to and from school and that they are not using high-powered devices while underage or unsupervised.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs Michelle Greenhalgh for her caring and capable leadership as Outside School Hours Care Service Leader at Pacific Lutheran College. Michelle has done an outstanding job managing rosters, overseeing daily planning, and guiding the ongoing development of our Quality Improvement Plan (QIP). Her attention to detail and commitment to excellence have ensured that our OSHC program runs smoothly and continues to provide high-quality care for every child.

Michelle’s warmth, professionalism, and strong relationships with children, families, and staff have helped create a nurturing and engaging environment where everyone feels valued and supported. We are deeply grateful for her dedication and wish her every blessing as she moves into the next chapter of her journey.

We are also delighted to welcome Mrs Deb Barwick as our new OSHC Service Leader. Deb already knows the children and families well and is excited to take on this role. Her deep understanding of our OSHC community, combined with her enthusiasm and genuine care, will ensure a smooth and positive transition.

• Boost mood and reduce anxiety by releasing feel-good hormones like oxytocin and dopamine.

• Build resilience by helping young people feel capable, valued, and connected.

How Parents Can Encourage a Spirit of Service

As parents and carers, you play a vital role in helping children and teens develop a heart for service. Here are a few simple ways to nurture this at home:

• Model it: Let your child see you helping others, whether it’s checking in on a neighbour, volunteering, or simply offering a kind word.

• Talk about it: Ask reflective questions like, “Who did you help today?” or “How did it feel to be kind?”

• Celebrate effort, not just outcomes: Praise the intention and action, even if the result is small.

• Create opportunities: Encourage your child to help with age-appropriate tasks, writing a thank-you note, helping a sibling, or donating toys they’ve outgrown.

Service doesn’t have to be big or formal. It can be as simple as a smile, a helping hand, or a moment of listening. When we encourage our children to serve others, we’re also helping them build stronger mental health, deeper empathy, and a lifelong sense of purpose.

Before the holiday break, thirteen of our Year 5 students proudly represented Pacific at the Kids in Action 2025 Conference held at the beautiful Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden. This annual event celebrated student-led environmental learning, leadership, and action.

The day began with a moving Welcome to Country and an inspiring opening address from Mayor Rosanna Natoli. A standout highlight followed as our students took to the main stage to perform their original song, "Stay Steady." Their confidence, creativity, and energy lit up the stage and set the tone for a day filled with inspiration.

Students took part in a variety of hands-on environmental workshops, run by passionate young changemakers from schools across the region — from Kingaroy to Sunshine Beach and throughout our local community. Workshop topics included bush tucker and local harvests, nature-powered audio technology, pollution solutions, and DIY terrariums — all under the empowering theme of Kids Teaching Kids.

When it came time for our students to lead, they truly rose to the occasion. Their workshop, Emotional Animals: How to Stay Steady to Build a Safer School and World, was thoughtful, heartfelt and impactful. They shared important messages about emotional wellbeing and environmental responsibility, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who attended.

A huge congratulations to our Kids in Action Team for their inspiring leadership, teamwork, and commitment to making a positive difference — both at the conference and throughout the year. Thank you to Pacific teachers and staff for their work and supporting students to make this conference possible.

Last term, we celebrated and farewelled our show-stopping Class of 2025 Year 12 Music students, who took to the stage for their final Pacific performance – and what a performance it was. Their passion, dedication, and outstanding talent were on full display, leaving a lasting impression on everyone in the audience.

We were also treated to exceptional performances from our Senior Concert Band, Voices, Rock Band, Strings, Jazz Ensemble, and the evening’s grand finale – the Pacific Orchestra. From start to finish, the concert was a vibrant celebration of musical excellence and the power of music to connect and inspire.

Congratulations to all our incredible Senior Music students, and heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff – especially Mrs Helen Williams, Ms Krist-elle Hill, and our passionate instrumental teachers – for bringing this unforgettable night to life. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the Pacific community.

Pyjama Party in the Library

Friday, 24th of October, the library will be holding a pyjama party for P-5 families from 5-7pm. Come along and enjoy some hot chocolate and biscuits, read stories together, do craft activities and try our glow stick dance party.

Competitive Sport

Champion Basketball School of Queensland Competition

Over the first weekend of the Spring holidays, our Senior Boys and Girls basketball teams took to the courts at the CBSQ Basketball Competition on the Gold Coast. Our Senior Boys team delivered a strong performance, finishing 9th overall with a commendable record of 4 wins and 3 losses. The team built momentum throughout the tournament, growing stronger with each game. Their defensive intensity was a highlight and a key factor in their success. Pacific was proudly represented throughout the weekend, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to the families and supporters who travelled to cheer on our teams. Well done teams – an outstanding effort both on and off the court. A huge thank you to all students and staff who participated and a special mention to our graduating Year 12 players on your commitment to the program over the last few years.

Netball Trials

Preparation for our 2025 Netball season will be starting over the next few weeks. We will be running trials for our Intermediate and Senior competitive teams in Week 3 and 4 this term. Trials will be held on the rear netball courts next to the main oval. Junior Team trials will be held early in 2026.

Details are as follows:

Thursday 23rd October 1-1:40pm (Lunch): Senior Team Trials (2025 Year 10 and 11 students)

Friday 31st October 1:45pm-3:15pm (Sport Time): Intermediate Team Trials (2025 Year 8 and 9 students)

These trials are vital in having a strong level of organization for the start of next year. 

Students who are interested in participating in competitive netball in 2026 need to register their interest with netball coordinator, Mrs Michelle Dufty, at mdufty@pacluth.qld.edu.au 

Term 4 Competitive Sports

SCISSA Tennis and Rugby will begin fixtures next Wednesday. Basketball will begin again on Friday night and Water Polo will resume on the 14th of October. Information should have now been sent home regarding final details for Tennis and Rugby 7’s teams. AFL Lighting Cup for the Year 9-10 girls will start from Week 4 when the Year 9 group has returned from camp. Fixtures will continue to be updated on Clipboard over the next few weeks. Students and parents can access fixture information through NAV Calendar (under student view) or accessing the Clipboard link from the MY PLC web portal.

Student Acknowledgement:

Harley in Year 7 will be competing this coming weekend in the Queensland Youth Boulder Titles in the Under 15 division. Being only 13 years old and his first state titles it will be a big weekend for Harley.  We congratulate him for making it to the state titles in his first year in the sport. Primary Schools Cup Netball 

Over the first weekend of the September school holidays two PLC Netball teams represented the College at the Queensland Primary Schools Cup Netball Carnival held at the Underwood Netball Association in Brisbane. Both teams had been working hard on their skills, training for two terms under the guidance our netball coaches, Mrs Michelle Dufty and Mrs Karen Costa

A total of 85 Teams within Queensland registered for the carnival in the following divisions:

•          Division 1 Championship – 35 teams

•          Division 2 Challenge – 29 teams

•          Division 3 Development – 21 teams

PLC Jewels competed in Division 1 Championship, and after two days of competition placed 19th out of the 35 schools. A top 19th place in Queensland is a great result, considering our Year 6 students returned the day before from a big week on camp in Canberra. This did affect the students on day 1 of the competition with a couple narrow losses. The team went undefeated on the second day of the competition. 

PLC Gems competed in Division 3 Development and at the end of the weekend placed 6th out of the 21 schools participating in their division. This was an excellent result for this team there were a number of students that were new to netball, and students with limited netball experience.  When it counted this team connected on court and exceeded all our expectations.

A very big thankyou to all our parents for their support through-out the two days and also to Mrs Michelle Dufty and Mrs Karen Costa who coached the girls during Term Two and Three and also the first weekend of their holidays. 

Year 2 – 5 Learn to Surf Program

As part of our school surfing program, we are pleased to announce that we will be offering a four week Learn to Surf Program for students in Year 2 – 5 this term. The program will be run through North Caloundra Surf School in conjunction with Pacific Lutheran College staff.  A range of topics will be covered in this four-week program including: reading ocean conditions, board handling and developing fundamental movements such as balance, agility and coordination.

Details of the program are as follows:

•          Monday mornings before school, 6:00am arrival for a 6:15am start. Sessions will conclude at 7:15am.

•          Program begins on Monday 20th October (Week 3 ) and runs through to Monday 10th November (Week 6).

•          Students will surf at various Caloundra beaches (Kings, Dicky’s, Happy Valley) depending upon conditions. 

•          Parents are responsible for transport to and from the venue.

A portion of the cost of the program will be subsidised through the College but will still cost $20 per student which will cover four surfing sessions as well as use of a foam surfboard and wet shirt supplied through North Caloundra Surf School. Participation in this program is limited with only 24 places available with only a few places left. Pacific Lutheran College has several sports development programs outside of school hours. These programs encourage participation, giving students the opportunity to be part of a team, and learn basic skills of the game.

The parent-led Pacific FC Soccer and PLC Netball Clubs compete on Saturdays in community competitions throughout the Sunshine Coast.

PLC Netball finished the season with bang! Our Division 1 Fireballs won their grand final game and ended the seasons as Champions. Congratulations to the whole team, and a particularly special congratulations and thank you for those girls for whom this was their last game for PLC Netball.

The netball continues with 3 PLC teams starting this week in the Caloundra Netball spring season, a shorter season through term 4. Best of luck and have fun to all participating!

Pacific FC players Ryder (U11 Swordfish) and Harley (U13 Sharks) were selected and attended the prestigious Westham National Camp at The Southport School on the Gold Coast over the break. The boys thoroughly enjoyed their experience, and we congratulate them on their hard work and dedication.

CFFA NATIONAL TITLES 

Congratulations to Tyler from our U16/17 Pacific Barracudas who represented the Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association at the Christian Football Federation Australia during the holidays. Well done on earning the Christian Football Federation Australia All Stars Award and selection for the CFF All Stars team.

Congratulations also to Noella, a former Pacific FC player, who took out top honours at the Christian Football Federation Australia's National Titles with the following awards after her team won the U17 Girls Grand Final:

Noella played with our Pacific Razors for 7 years from 2017-2023. She also won the U16/17 Division of the 2025 Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Adermann Award.
