Every day we are confronted by a myriad of choices, opportunities and responsibilities. Making choices about what we do and how we do it flows from the bigger question of why we do. Being aware of personal values and goals and those of our friends, family and community means we are able to be more discerning in our choices. Seeing ourselves as connected people who have influence through the decisions we make prompts us to ask the questions of how this is aligning with personally held values and goals and those of our friends, families and community. How does the choice I make have an impact on me, for those around me and beyond?

God invites us to use our gifts to make a difference for others out of love for ourselves and for our neighbour. We are encouraged to trust that God walks with us, guiding us, providing for our daily needs and equipping us to grow through the experiences we encounter. Empowered by His love and grace, we choose to act out of a sense of possibility and hope. We can choose to be more rather than hold firmly to less. Our choices broaden and deepen our connections to the adventure of life and each other.

As I engage with students, staff and parents there is a strong sense of “we can do this”. This was a characteristic of the College from its very inception and continues to be a defining quality of our community. Decisions about the nature of learning focused and continue to focus on what is important for both young people and the adults of our community to flourish now and into the future. This has seen us encouraging, walking and growing together as a learning community, taking up the opportunity to extend experiences, through being discerning, growing our capability and being generous with our gifts. The engagement with the broader community to make a difference and to contribute to growth, through engagement with research, the formation of partnerships and exploration of new ideas and practices has enabled an evolving richness in learning experiences across all dimensions of life both within and beyond Pacific.

Our newsletter intentionally aims to build parents' capacity to act as partners in their children's learning. This week, Head of Learning Middle College, Mrs Jo Belchamber provides simple strategies and questions that parents can model and use to increase the capacity of young people to develop and access resources to grow through challenge and complexity. The articles from our Counselling team encourage the use of “yet” as a powerful enabler and the Head of Career Development supports parents to engage with Senior students in planning for next steps beyond school. Our learning leaders also provide important advice to help parents ensure their children are ready for NAPLAN. Sharing useful information you have read in the newsletter with each other as parents helps strengthen the flow and learning within the community.

As groups who have and continue to significantly contribute to opportunity and experience within the College, we thank and wish our PLC Netball and Pacific FC Clubs all the best as they prepare to step into competitions for 2026. We encourage families to consider ways that they can support the executive members capably led by Mr Doug McKinnon, and Mrs Rita Williams.

We congratulate our District Swimming Teams who competed very well in last week’s Independent District Swimming Carnivals. Students demonstrated great spirit, encouraging one another and stepping up to events to strengthen team performance. We congratulate our Year 7-12 team on being placed third and our Year 3-6 team being placed 6th. We wish all the best to competitors who now proceed to the regional competition. We thank Mr Darren Hooper, Mr Cameron West-McInnes and Mrs Lisa Muir and their team for organisation and leadership of these teams.

Our Pacific musicians enjoyed and grew through the opportunity of coming together at their Music Camp over the weekend. The weekend strengthens musicianship and relationships as students and staff share their love of music and enjoy times of relaxation together. Students value the opportunity to connect with one another and showcase their talents to their parents at the culminating concert. We thank our Head of Instrumental Music, Mrs Helen Williams, Head of Music Mrs Krist-elle Hill, teachers Mr Jarvis Miller and Ms Linley Chai, Mrs Alysha Borak and instrumental staff for their leadership and enthusiasm.

The Year 9 Rite Journey Departure held this week provided rich opportunities for connection between parents and students. Mr Duncan McNee provided meaningful and thought provoking insights as he led the ceremony that marked the beginning of a year of growth towards adulthood. The time for students and their families to connect and share reflections about the experiences and learnings of parents as they travelled through their Year 9 journey and the hopes contained within the letters written by the Year 9s was a central part of the ceremony. We wish our Year 9 Rite Journey students, teachers and their families a year of rich growth. We thank Mr Duncan McNee for his thoughtful leadership and teachers, students and parents for their engagement.

As we face decisions and choices may God equip us to hold firm to what is good and to move confidently forward with next steps to open possibility and hope.

Early Monday morning, after an amazing sixteen days of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, we saw it’s closing ceremony at Arena di Verona. The ceremony, titled “Beauty in Action” blended Italian opera, ballet, and popular music with the traditional parade of athletes giving it a theatrical, festive feel, in which all athletes could shine. 

The IOC President, Kirsty Coventry, praised the Italian initiative of spreading these games over a vast area of northern Italy, using existing venues as setting a precedent for future Winter Games. The extinguishing of twin Olympic cauldrons in Milan and Cortina at the same time on video link indicated the end of this Winter Olympics. As always, the ceremony included the handover of the Olympic flag to a representative of the next host, the French Alps for 2030. This signified continuity and anticipation of the next Winter Olympics.

As I watched this ceremony my thoughts immediately went to this week’s thread, planning and decision-making. I was struck by the amount of planning and individual decision-making that would have to go into putting on the closing ceremony, let alone the entire Winter Olympics. This planning and decision-making began a long time before the event. Planning and decision-making are always looking forward to the future. Goals are set and outcomes are desired and all planning and decision-making are aimed towards reaching the desired outcome.

Although each athlete carefully plans and makes considered decisions in preparation for the Winter Games, there are no guarantees of the outcome. Only a few walk away with a medal. But at the end of the games, it’s not the winners of the medals that I remember and gain encouragement from. What I most appreciated was the human heart of care and support for one another that I saw between the athletes. When one did well, they were there to help them celebrate and enjoy the moment and when one went through disappointment, they gathered around to give comfort and encouragement. 

In our text from Matthew 6 this week, Jesus highlights the difference between performing to gain personal reward in the present and actions that come from the heart. So often we are tempted to act in a certain way to be seen as good members of the community. But Jesus wants us to realize that who we are and what we have are all a pure gift from God. He desires that we live and act like those that wish to express his kingdom’s love to all in this world. This is building up treasure in heaven.

Jesus encourages us, in the prayer that he taught, to pray regularly that God’s kingdom would come, and God’s will be done on earth among us now as it is in heaven. This is clear encouragement for us to live out the love that Jesus has shown us with one another in everything we do. We can then forgive one another, because we have been forgiven. We can encourage one another, because we have been encouraged. We can care for one another because we are cared for by God’s continual mercy to us, day by day. It is by living with one another in this way that we store up treasure in heaven that will last. So, let’s all grow in this love relationship with God through Jesus that we might have plenty of love in our hearts to share.

Last week in Compass, we introduced the Resource Management stage of the Pacific Lutheran College Metacognition Toolkit. Resource management focuses on the external factors that support learning, for example, how students organise their time and space to give themselves the best chance of academic success. 

A structured learning environment plays an important role, but resource management does not happen in isolation. What students observe in their social environment influences how they approach challenges, manage their time and attention, and seek help when needed.

To make effective decisions about which strategies to use in different learning situations, students need metacognition; an understanding of their own thinking and of the factors that influence learning. Before young learners can regulate their learning, they must first notice when they understand and when they are confused. They also need to be aware of strategies to address confusion. This awareness allows them to act rather than remain stuck.

Strategies from the Pacific Lutheran College Metacognition Toolkit can be reinforced at home through simple modelling. To help learners develop resource management skills, parents and older siblings can talk aloud about how to approach challenging tasks. For example:

• “Can I break up this task into smaller steps and approach it over time?”
• “Am I sure about what I am doing?”
• “Where could I find an example to guide me?” Is there a worked example in an exercise book? On Nav?”
•  “Have I revisited the instructions or rubric to see how I am going?”
• “What will I do if I get stuck?”
• “Who could I ask if I’m unsure?”
• “How can I use the draft feedback to improve this?”
• “Do I need to plan my time more effectively in future?”

This kind of self-talk develops students’ capacity to plan, monitor and evaluate their learning. It also prompts thoughtful resource management — choosing when to persist independently and when to seek support.

Through explicit modelling and supportive routines, adults play a vital role in strengthening learners’ developing ability to manage their resources thoughtfully and independently. Over time, these habits build confident, self-regulated learners who can identify what to learn and how to learn successfully.

Resource Management is the second phase of the Metacognition Toolkit, found on pages 29–33 of the Student Handbook and on the Learning and Assessment tile on Nav.

This week our Year 9 cohort marked a significant milestone as students and parents gathered in the Health and Fitness Precinct for the Departure Ceremony of the Rite Journey Program. The evening was a powerful and meaningful beginning to what promises to be a year of growth, challenge and transformation.

A central part of the ceremony invited parents to speak personally to their child about their own Year 9 journey. They were encouraged to speak about their own challenges they faced, mistakes they made, resilience they developed and the triumphs they experienced. These honest and heartfelt reflections were designed to remind students that adolescence is not meant to be smooth or simple, but it is a time that shapes character, courage and direction.

In return, students presented letters they had handwritten to their parents. In these letters, they described the adult they hope to become, the qualities they want to embody, the values they want to stand for and the goals they dream of pursuing. It was a moving exchange that strengthened the partnership between home and school, reinforcing that this journey is not one they walk alone.

The Departure Ceremony signals the beginning of a year intentionally designed to build maturity, self-awareness and responsibility. As our Pacific students look ahead to entering Senior College in 2027, we are confident they will do so with a growing sense of identity and the confidence to strive toward their goals and dreams.

We extend our sincere thanks to Mr Duncan McNee for his leadership and thoughtful guidance in leading the ceremony. We also thank our parents for their presence, encouragement and ongoing support as together we guide our young people through this important stage of life.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an Australia-wide assessment for students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9. It provides valuable information about students’ skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and numeracy, and helps schools understand how well students are progressing over time.

NAPLAN is one part of a school’s overall assessment program. Teachers use a wide range of assessments throughout the year to inform teaching and learning and to support each child’s growth. 

All students are expected to participate in NAPLAN unless they are exempt or formally withdrawn by their parent or carer.

• Exemptions may apply for students with significant disabilities or for students from a non-English speaking background who have been in Australia for less than 12 months. These exemptions must be approved and recorded by the College.
• Withdrawals occur when a parent or carer chooses to withdraw their child from NAPLAN. This must be done in writing using the official withdrawal form provided by the College.

We aim to support students to approach NAPLAN with confidence and a positive mindset. Teachers will help students feel prepared and reassured, and we encourage families to do the same by emphasising effort, resilience, and doing their best rather than focusing on test results.

When planning for university entry, it’s important to understand Adjustment Factors.

Adjustment Factors can enhance your chances of gaining entry into university courses by improving your position on the merit scale. If eligible, your ATAR or selection rank may be adjusted to make it more competitive.

Universities offer Adjustment Factors for a variety of reasons and programs. As processes differ between institutions, early research is essential.

We are excited to begin preparations to welcome our sister school, Seishin Gakuen back into the Pacific community for our biennial sister school visit this year. Pacific formed a sister school relationship with Seishin Gakuen, located in Kashima City (2 hours away from Tokyo) Japan in 2004. 

Seishin last visited Pacific in 2024 and last year, 18 Pacific students visited Seishin as part of the Japan Trip. This year, we are expecting 22 students from Seishin to visit our College in Term 3 for a week. Of the 22 students, 2 students will be staying an additional week, as we recommence the Inbound Exchange Program.

• Seishin Visit: 29th July (Wednesday) – 4th August (Tuesday)
• Inbound Exchange: 29th July (Wednesday) – 12th August (Wednesday) 

Opportunities to host a Seishin student are available to our Senior College students in Year 9-12. Students do not have to be studying Japanese to host. Expression of Interest forms can be collected from the Wellbeing Centre, Main Admin Reception, or from Mrs Hauser (S Block staffroom). Project Paws was created in 2025 by 4 Year 8 Girls for their entry into the National Future Problem Solving competition. These students are now preparing for the international competition to be held in Indiana in June and are working hard to continue to educate our Pacific community about the importance of responsible pet ownership.

We are very excited to announce that each Project Paws entry in The Compass newsletter each week will feature one of the pets who are a part of our school community. You might be lucky enough to find a photo of your pet!

Do you think it is important to have a screen-free hobby? This was one of the impromptu questions Captain Ned and Vice-Captain Orly tackled on Monday night at the Lions Club of Lake Currimundi Kawana’s round of The Lions Youth of The Year Competition. 

Students submitted an application, faced a general knowledge interview panel and presented three speeches at the event. Once the impromptu speech topics were delivered, students had to think on their feet and speak for two minutes. The prepared speech involved a 5 minute topic of the students’ choice. 

Ned spoke about the dangers posed by shark nets and Orly addressed the threats posed by a decline of spontaneity.  The members and guests at the dinner event found the speeches compelling and thought-provoking. 

We congratulate Ned and Orly on their excellent performances at this event and thank the Lions for the opportunity to be part of such a prestigious competition promoting the excellence of our young people.

From Prep to Production: Beau’s Full-Circle Journey

Mr Beau Blake’s story is one of friendship, leadership and coming home.

Beau began his Pacific journey in Prep and remained through to Year 12, graduating in 2017. Over those 13 formative years, he built not only a strong academic foundation but friendships that have truly stood the test of time. Alongside his good mates Max and Reese, Beau formed bonds that have carried well beyond the College gates, a testament to the lifelong connections nurtured at Pacific.

Some of Beau’s fondest memories take him right back to his earliest days in Prep, where Mrs Sue Zweck guided his first steps into College n life. From those beginnings, Beau grew into a confident and capable young leader. In his final year, he proudly served as Vice Captain, contributing to College life.

Today, Beau is making his mark in the world of Film and Media as the director of his own production company, Pepper Productions. In a wonderful full-circle moment, he has returned to Pacific, this time behind the lens, to help create a dynamic visual record of College life as we celebrate 25 Years of Pacific. It is a fitting role for an alumnus whose own story is so deeply woven into the fabric of the College.

Beyond his professional achievements, Beau has recently reached another exciting milestone, purchasing his first home on the Sunshine Coast. As he begins this new chapter, settling in and taking on renovation projects, he is doing so surrounded by the same loyal group of Pacific friends who have been by his side since childhood. In true Pacific spirit, they are rolling up their sleeves and lending a hand.

We congratulate Beau on all he has accomplished so far. His journey reflects the enduring power of community, character and connection and we look forward to seeing where his next chapter takes him.

Pacific Lutheran College’s 2026 Senior Music Ensembles Camp was held at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Precinct in Currimundi, bringing together passionate young Pacific musicians for three inspiring days of music-making and connection.

The camp welcomed Middle and Senior College students who will be members of the following 2026 ensembles:

• Senior Concert Band
• Pacific Senior Voices
• Senior String Ensemble
• Pacific Orchestra

Across the three-day program, students participated in two full days of focused rehearsals, culminating in a final concert performance that showcased their developing repertoire and ensemble cohesion.

Musicians engaged in intensive rehearsals within their full ensemble groups, as well as smaller tutorial sessions that allowed for targeted skill development. These smaller group workshops provided valuable opportunities for individual growth, technical refinement, and deeper musical understanding.

Beyond the music, the camp fostered meaningful connections among students who share a passion for performance. Through collaborative rehearsals, shared meals, and time spent together at the venue, students strengthened friendships and built a strong foundation for the year ahead.

The 2026 Senior Music Ensembles Camp proved to be a fantastic opportunity for both musical development and community building — setting the tone for an exciting year of performance and excellence in music at Pacific Lutheran College. Seeking 2026 Parent Connectors

A great strength of the Pacific learning journey has always been the willingness of parents and families to support the College community by involvement in activities that strengthen relationships and foster opportunities for our students, staff and parents.

The Friends of Pacific (FoP) play a vital role in strengthening the Pacific community. Throughout the year the FoP are responsible for the organisation of a variety of events that support student connection as well as many other initiatives such as trivia nights and the bi-annual OCEANfest. 

Expressions of interest are being sought for Parent Connectors across year levels. The role of a Parent Connector will be to serve as a link between the College and our community through a range of activities such as welcoming new families and providing social opportunities within year levels.

At times, Parent Connectors will also be called upon to support the various functions and events held by the College and FoP. We are hoping this year, that we may have several Parent Connectors per year level, to provide support for each other and our wider community. One or two from each class across Prep-Year 6 would be extremely helpful as we gear up to support FoP with their Trivia Night in August.

Competitive Sport News:

Next week students will be able to sign up for a range of competitive and representative sporting options for Term 2. Students are encouraged to look at all options and consider how they may be able to represent Pacific in sport this year. Multiple sports may be played in a term if there are no clashes with the days in which fixtures are played. The sign on portal will open up on Tuesday morning in Week 6 and close on Tuesday afternoon in Week 8.

Options for competitive/development sport sign-ups are as follows:

SCISSA Wrap Up

Well done to all our SCISSA teams who took on Good Shepherd College last night. Our Intermediate Soccer teams had a great trip out with the boys securing a gritty 1-0 win and the girls coming up with a 10-0 victory. At home, our Junior A Boys went down 2-1 in a very close game, and they have been showing great improvement each week. Our Intermediate B Boys played valiantly against Glasshouse College, finishing the game with a 3-1 loss.

In the Volleyball, our Senior A teams were challenged by strong opposition at home. A special mention goes to the Senior A Girls who continue to improve each week and took the match to a tie breaker. Our Senior B Boys team also pushed their opposition in their away game and went down in a nail biter in the last set. Congratulations to the Senior B Girls team who have now made it 3 wins in a row.

We wish all our teams the best in their fixtures against Immanuel College next week.

Trish Buckley (Senior Volleyball):

Our Pacific teams are going from strength to strength each week. They have shocked some of the other powerhouse volleyball teams on the Sunshine coast with some hard-fought wins. Playing 3 games in one night and refereeing is demanding on the teams, but they continue to rise to the occasion. Pacific community attendance has helped lift the teams when they are playing and the support is well received and appreciated by all. Round 3 will take place on Friday 13th March and we wish our teams all the best.

District Swimming

A huge congratulations to our Pacific swimming team. Pacific put on an outstanding performance at the Independent District Swimming Carnival. Finishing 3rd in Championship Points and proudly taking home the Percentage Trophy is a remarkable achievement and a true testament to the dedication, teamwork, and Pacific spirit shown throughout the day.

Our Middle College athletes delivered some absolute superstar swims, setting the tone with skill, determination, and composure in the pool. They were brilliantly supported by the strong and committed performances of our Senior students, whose resilience and encouragement lifted the entire team.

The energy on pool deck, the cheers from teammates, and the pride in wearing Pacific colours made it a day to remember. We couldn’t be prouder of the way our athletes represented Pacific — with excellence, integrity, and heart. Congratulations to all swimmers and coaches on a truly memorable carnival.

Primary Independent District Swimming Carnival

On Wednesday our swimmers from Year 3 – 6 represented Pacific at the annual Independent Primary District Swimming Carnival held at Sunshine Coast Grammar. Students from 11 Independent schools competed at the carnival with some fantastic individual and team results recorded from Pacific students during the day. 

 Pacific finished in 6th place out of the 11 schools competing at the carnival with a great team performance on display.

• 3rd place – 11 Girls 50m Backstroke
• 3rd – 11 Girls 50m Breaststroke 

Xavier (Year 6)

• Well done to Mason (Year 3), who was the runner-up age champion in the 9 years boys age group at the end of the carnival. 

Lastly congratulations to the following Pacific students who have been selected for the Independent District Swimming Team to compete at the upcoming Sunshine Coast Regional Swimming Carnival to be held at Sunshine Coast Grammar Aquatic Centre.

District Sport Student Success

Over the past few weeks there have been a number of Pacific students who have attended Independent District Sporting Trials in a range of sports. Congratulations to the following students who have been selected in Independent District Sporting Teams and will now progress to the next level of competition – Sunshine Coast Regional Trials.

Upcoming District and Regional Sporting Trials

Following is a list of sports and dates for district and regional sport trials throughout the year. Trials are open to students in the 10 – 12 years age group. Students wishing to trial should be at a high level in their chosen sport and would need to be able to play competitively in an outside of school competition for this sport. 

There are several sports that are trailing in the next few weeks, if your child is interested in attending these trials, please register prior to the cutoff date. No late registrations will be accepted. If you would like to find out further information or register your child for one of these sports please email Mrs Lisa Muir (Pacific Sports Administrator) lmuir@pacluth.qld.edu.au to register your interest.

Pacific Lutheran College has several sports development programs outside of school hours. These programs encourage participation, giving students the opportunity to be part of a team, and learn basic skills of the game.

The parent-led Pacific FC Soccer and PLC Netball Clubs compete on Saturdays in community competitions throughout the Sunshine Coast.

2026 Season – 7th March

We are looking forward to the season kicking off on Saturday, March 7th with U6-U10 Carnivals, as well as U11-U16/17 grading games or matches. 

Pacific will host the U6, U7 Girls, U8, and U10 Carnivals, while our U7, U9 and U10 Girls will play away. We thank the many coaches and managers who have stepped up this season. We also thank Lucie and Amelie for their organisation in the canteen for the season ahead and the grounds crew for preparing the fields. Each family will also have a turn in the canteen or on field set-up/pack-up throughout the season.

A Sunday of Celebration and Grace – St Mark’s Lutheran Church

Families of Pacific Lutheran College are warmly invited to join us for a special and joyful time of worship at St Mark’s Lutheran Church, Sunday 1st March at 9:00am, 14 Bombala Terrace, Caloundra.

This Sunday continues our Lenten journey as we discover again how God’s grace meets us with forgiveness, renewal, and hope. It will be a particularly meaningful service as we celebrate several important milestones in the life of our church family. 

We rejoice in the baptism of Alex an adult, witnessing God’s promise of new life and belonging. 

We also celebrate with Lacey (Pacific student) as she receives her First Communion, an important step in her faith journey as she receives Christ’s gift of grace in bread and wine. 

In addition, we will have a blessing for Tom Zweck and Britney Hatchman as they prepare for their upcoming marriage, surrounding them with prayer and encouragement.

Children are warmly invited to participate in St Mark’s Makers, a creative and reflective activity during worship designed especially for them. 

Following the service, all are welcome to stay for morning tea and friendship as we continue the celebration together.

Saturday Sunset Service – Beginning the Journey Together

You are also warmly invited to our Saturday Sunset Service on 28th February at 5:30pm, a peaceful and reflective time to pause and begin the Lenten journey of forgiveness and renewal. A shared meal and friendship time follows at 6:15pm, offering a relaxed and welcoming space for connection across the community.
