As Term 2 gets underway at Pacific, many students are settling back into routines, reconnecting with friends, and starting to think about the months ahead. It’s a great time to pause and reflect on your goals for the year. Whether you’re in Year 10 considering Senior subject selections, or in Year 12 preparing for life after school, this term offers an important opportunity to focus on understanding yourself.
Before making decisions about subjects, study pathways, or future careers, it’s essential to know what genuinely interests you, where your strengths lie, and what matters most to you. This self-awareness forms the foundation for confident and informed career choices.
Why self-discovery matters
Planning your future is a bit like planning a journey, you need to understand your starting point before choosing the best path forward. When you have a clear sense of your interests, strengths, and values, you’re better equipped to make decisions that align with who you are and what you want from your future. For Year 10 students, this insight can guide subject selections for Senior years. For Year 11 and 12 students, it helps refine your direction as you consider options such as university, TAFE, apprenticeships, or entering the workforce.
A simple activity to get started
Set aside some time this week to reflect on the following questions. You might like to write your thoughts in a notebook or on your phone:
• What am I naturally good at? Think beyond school subjects. You might be skilled at explaining ideas, solving problems, working with your hands, or bringing people together.
• What activities keep me engaged? Consider what captures your attention: whether it’s coding, art, sport, building, or something else.
• What do I value? Reflect on what’s important to you, such as creativity, helping others, independence, stability, innovation, or making a difference.
• What environments suit me best? Do you prefer working independently or in a team? Indoors or outdoors? With structure or flexibility?
Look for patterns in your responses. These insights can help identify career paths and study options that suit you. It’s also valuable to discuss your ideas with parents, teachers, peers, or the Pacific Careers Team as you continue exploring your future.
